People are reportedly buying more iPhone 7s than iPhone 8s in the US

More customers in the US are buying the iPhone 7 than the iPhone 8, according to a new report from KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh (via Reuters).

Apple hasn’t released sales numbers for the iPhone 8, but it’s beginning to look like the new phone has had something of a muted response since its release at the end of September. Notably, the iPhone 8 was still readily available on launch day, instead of the usual sold out numbers that have historically shown up for previous models.

There are, of course, a number of factors that could be contributing to the iPhone 8’s lukewarm sales: there are already reports that people are holding out for the iPhone X, which could be cutting into the 8’s sales. Additionally, there is the simple fact that if you’ve already got an iPhone 7, there isn’t a whole lot in the 8 to entice you to upgrade. Plus, the iPhone 7 is roughly $150 cheaper than the iPhone 8, which makes it an appealing proposition to new customers, too.

Preorders for the iPhone X are slated to start on October 27th, so we’ll see if Apple can bust out of its iPhone sales funk with the far more anticipated new model.

See what you’ll see at sea in Battlefield 1’s Turning Tides |TTI

Battlefield 1 [official site] is off to sea sea sea in its next expansion, Turning Tides, so come see what you will see see see. EA today blasted more details on the DLC, explaining about flying airships over the Gallipoli peninsula, cruising the waves of Heligoland Bight in a new destroyer, and shooting guns whose names have a lot of letters and numbers. It’s still weird to me that Turning Tides is split into two releases — most of it coming in December, then the rest in January 2018 — but better two parts than a delay for the lot I suppose.

So! December will bring two new maps set around the Gallipoli peninsula of the Ottoman Empire (it’s in Turkey now). Cape Helles will fight over the beaches by land, sea, and air, while the Achi Babi map will bring a scrap to control a hill.

Also coming in this lump are new weapons (the M1917 Trench Carbine, Maschinenpistole M1912/P.16, Farquhar-Hill, M1917 MG, Carcano M91 Carbine, Type 38 Arisaka, Naval Cutlass, and Grappling Hook), the new ‘Infiltrator’ Elite class, the four-seater L-Class Destroyer, the four-person C-Class Airship, ane new specialisations, Service Assignments, unlocks, and a new mode. Based on Conquest mode, Conquest Assault “sees attackers and defenders fight over key areas, exclusively controlled by the defending team as the match starts,” EA explain.

Moving into 2018, the Heligoland Bight will bring a big sea battle for control of the German bay, the Zeebrugge map will scrap over the Belgian port, and Royal Marines will join the scrap.

All this will come as part of the DLC season pass, and Turning Tides will be sold separately too. Though because EA are petty, people buying DLC separately get it two weeks later.

How’s the war treating y’all, gang?

Turkish Dramas Ready for Mipcom Buyers |TTI

Turkish TV dramas continue to click around the world thanks to their well-honed storylines with primal themes, a slower pace, and a more humanist feel than most Hollywood shows.

“It’s usually female-centric stories,” says Izzet Pinto, CEO of sales company Global Agency. “Basic [themes] of love, intrigue, relationships, family issues.” Pinto points out that the narratives always weave a main storyline with two secondary strands, which is “what gets people hooked.” But though the bulk of dizi, as the shows are known locally, are still melodramas, new genres are bursting forth prompted in part by the online streaming phenomenon. They testify the talent, originality and creative vibrancy of Turkey’s TV community.

The following is a compendium of recent Turkish TV drama standouts, several of which will launch internationally at Mipcom.

    Bandits
In this crime series from Turkish network ATV and produced by Fark Film, a young man infiltrates the Turkish mob after his brother is killed. He gains the boss’ trust, and must then navigate treacherous waters. Meryem Uzerli, the mega-star of Turkey’s game-changing “Magnificent Century” skein, stars in the second season.

    Cennet
    (Tears of Heaven)
Eccho Rights, which recently set up an outpost in Seoul, will launch the Turkish redo of Korean skein “Tears of Heaven” in Cannes, produced by Surec Films for ATV.

    City of Secrets
This gritty drama is about an undercover government agent on a mission to take down an Istanbul mob boss, but falls for his daughter. It reunites Turkish megastar Erkan Petekkaya with director Cevdet Mercan, following “Broken Pieces,” 2016’s top-exported Turkish drama. It is produced by Karga Seven Pictures for Fox Turkey, which is planning a splashy Cannes launch.

    Endless Love (pictured)
Romancer about a young artist forced into a marriage in order to save her brother from going to jail is the first Turkish TV series nominated for an International Emmy in the best series category; produced by Ay Yapim.

    Mehmed the Conqueror
One of the most ambitious productions spawned by the Kanal D powerhouse, this show mines Ottoman history once again, this time in the form of Sultan Mehmed II, who, in 1453 at age 21, conquered Constantinople (today’s Istanbul), ending the Eastern Roman Empire. Kanal D is launching the show in Cannes prior to its December playdate in Turkey.

    New Bride
Produced by Surec Films, “Bride” is about a young woman from the city who marries the heir of an Anatolian tribe and goes to live with his family, where she is expected to act as a maid. After scoring stellar ratings this spring, “Bride” has been renewed for a second season, which started airing in September.

    Phi
Groundbreaking OTT original about a celebrity psychiatrist who is a compulsive womanizer has been a massive hit on Turkey’s new Puhu TV platform, scoring 12 million unique viewers this spring for its first season. More than 20% of Turkey’s Internet-connected population tuned in to the series. Produced by Ay Yapim, season two will soon launch in Turkey.

    Resurrection: Ertugrul
Centered around the life of Ertugrul Bey, the father of Osman Bey, who was the 13th century founder of the Ottoman Empire, the show is steeped in Turkish nationalism. It has been leading Turkish TV ratings on pubcaster TRT, which also produced and has sold it to some 60 territories.

    Tales of Innocence — Meryem
An adaptation of hit Korean drama “Secret Love,” “Meryem” revolves around a young woman who takes the blame for a hit-and-run committed by her prosecutor boyfriend. Produced by TMC Films, it scored solid ratings on Kanal D and bolstered the contention that Korean adaptations can gain traction in Turkey.

    Untitled First Netflix Turkish Original
Weaving Ottoman history, action tropes and supernatural elements, this show, produced by O3 Medya, toplines Turkish star Cagatay Ulusoy as a young man who discovers he has powers and must defend Istanbul from dark forces.

Children Are Learning To Wash Hands Before Eating By ‘Talking To Germs’ |TTI

“Don’t eat just after coming back from the playground.”

“Don’t put your hand in your mouth after using the bathroom.”

“Don’t eat without washing your hands.”

“You’ll fall sick if you put your dirty hands in your mouth.”

Nearly all parents and teachers have said this to children. But do they listen?

At such a young age, children are hyperactive with low attention span. Lessons on hygiene and diseases hardly get through to them. Making kids understand the importance washing hands before eating can be a task.

But Savlon, through an innovative campaign, is engaging children to understand the value of cleanliness.

In this video, the students can be seen ‘talking to germs’. Through its ‘Haath Se Baat’ initiative, Salvon uses a hidden voice artist that imitates germs and tells the children all about the dangerous diseases they can spread. The fun activity successfully convinces children about the importance of handwashing, without making it sound like a boring lecture.

Our kids are our future and their well-being comes above everything else. We live at a time when nearly 18 lakh children under the age of 5 die each year from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. These can be easily avoided by inculcating the healthy practice of handwashing.

Today, on Global Handwashing Day, let us help our children lead healthier lives by spreading awareness about the importance of washing hands before eating meals.

Yuki Bhambri advances to the second round |TTI

Bhambri is a qualifier at this ATP 250 tournament.

    2017 Citi Open
Yuki Bhambri looks to finish the season on a high

Indian tennis ace Yuki Bhambri continues his good run as he made it through to the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Monday. The World No. 146 needed 1 hour 6 minutes to beat the 475th ranked Roman Safiullin of Russia 6-2, 6-4, in a battle of former junior Australian Open champions.

Although the 20-year-old Russian powered seven aces past Bhambri and had 84% first serves in, he presented the Indian with seven break point opportunities out of which Yuki converted three. In contrast, the Indian did not face any break point.

Bhambri finished with a total of 60 points while Safullin could manage to bag only 41 points. Yuki will next meet the winner of the first round contest between the sixth seeded Damir Dzhumur and Thomas Fabbiano.

Bhambri entered the main draw of this ATP 250 tournament after winning two rounds in qualifying. He first beat Serbia’s 263rd ranked Danilo Petrovic 6-4, 6-4 and then followed it up with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Russia’s 188th ranked Alexey Vatutin in the final round of qualifying.

Yuki came into this tournament on the back of a runner-up finish in doubles alongside Divij Sharan at the Tashkent Challenger last Friday.

The 25-year-old is the only Indian playing at this tournament this week.

The Delhi player, who struggled with elbow injury in 2016, made a memorable run to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington in August before losing to the US Open runner-up Kevin Anderson.

Also read: Yuki Bhambri and Divij Sharan go down in Tashkent Challenger final

Paes, Sharan also in action this week

Meanwhile, Divij Sharan will look to push aside the Tashkent setback as he sets his eyes on the title at another ATP 250 event in Antwerp where he is playing with American Scott Lipsky. The two begin their campaign against the local pair of Steve Darcis and Arthur De Greef.

At the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm, Leander Paes has teamed up with his compatriot Purav Raja. The two have a tough challenge as they have the third seeds Jack Sock and Nenad Zimonjic in the first round.

Over in WTA, India’s Prarthana Thombare will be in action at the Luxembourg Open alongside Romania’s Alexandra Cadantu. They begin their quest against the Brazilian-Paraguayan combine of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Veronica Cepede Royg.

Storm Ophelia: third person killed in Ireland, police confirm – latest updates | World news |TTI

The Police Service of Northern Ireland have helped rescue a number of people from apartments on the Belfast Lough shore.

Number of residents evacuated from apartments in Rodgers Quay, Carrickfergus due to risk of flooding posed by tidal surges. #Ophelia

    October 16, 2017

The residents from Rodgers Quay in Carrickfergus were evacuated out of the complex following fears of tidal surges tonight.

They have been taken to a local council hall for the evening, the PSNI said.

    Updated

Trafficwatch NI has an interesting up-to-date figure on how Ophelia is causing chaos on Northern Ireland’s roads tonight. As of 6pm this evening there were 179 fallen trees or branches across the region’s roads.

    Trafficwatch NI

#Ophelia up to 6pm we have 179 reports of fallen trees / branches in the 4 @deptinfra regions Eastern 48 Northern 30 Southern 83 Western 18

    October 16, 2017

South Down is the area hardest hit by the storm on Monday evening and Trafficwatch NI points out that out of that 179 figure, 83 are roads in coastal parts of the county.

Meanwhile there are now 18,500 customers without electricity due to felled and damaged power lines. And while schools and further education colleges will shut for a second day on Tuesday, both Queen’s University and Ulster University will reopen.

Although the Irish Defence Forces have been deployed through the day to help with flood defences and rescue missions across Ireland one of its units had to cancel training due to Ophelia.

Its 11th Infantry Battalion has had to call off an exercise to prepare them for UN peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. Their mission readiness exercise puts commanders and soldiers through a series of scenarios based on threats in the South Lebanon region.

Troops were to be asked to secure, extract and evacuate personnel involved in a complex attack. However due to the storm, tomorrow’s exercise in the Glen of Imaal has been cancelled.

A member of the ruling Fine Gael party in the second chamber of the Irish parliament believes Ireland will be entitled to financial aid to help with reconstruction in the aftermath of Ophelia.

Senator Neale Richmond said the EU Solidarity Fund should be accessed. The fund was established by the EU in 2002 following severe floods in Central Europe. Since then it has been used to help out in disasters such as forest fires, floods and even earthquakes.

    Richmond said:

Given the huge amount of damage inflicted across the country by Hurricane Ophelia, Ireland will be eligible for such funds.

Any application has to be received by the European commission within 12 weeks of any disaster occurring.

This not a rapid response tool but it will be vital to the post storm recovery and I have no doubt the government will apply to draw down these funds once the initial emergency and relief measures are attended to.

The interesting question will be whether Northern Ireland could apply to the same European fund via the Westminster government even as Theresa May negotiates the UK’s exit from the EU.

Teddy Bridgewater cleared to return to Minnesota Vikings practice |TTI

The Minnesota Vikings will activate Teddy Bridgewater from the physically unable to perform list after the quarterback was cleared to return to Wednesday’s practice.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told reporters Monday that Bridgewater would practice with the team Wednesday.

Dr. Dan Cooper, the orthopedic specialist who performed the surgery on Bridgewater’s dislocated knee last year, examined him Monday, prompting the Vikings’ decision.

Bridgewater injured his knee in practice on Aug. 30, 2016, and has been on the physically unable to perform list this season.

The move to activate Bridgewater from the PUP list opens a three-week window for the Vikings to decide whether to promote him to the active roster or place him on injured reserve.

Babar Azam Shines As Pakistan Beat Sri Lanka By 32 Runs, Lead Series 2-0 |TTI

Babar Azam scored a succesive hundred while Shadab Khan gave his career best bowling and batting performance to help Pakistan thump Sri Lanka by 32 runs in the second day-night international in Abu Dhabi on Monday. One-drop batsman Babar knocked a fighting 133-ball 103 while Shadab scored a career best 52 not out to lift Pakistan from a struggling 79-5 before Shadab the bowler returned with his best figures of 3-47 to dismiss Sri Lanka for 187 all out in 48 overs. The 23-year-old Babar and Shadab, who turned 19 earlier this month, were engaged in a match-turning 109-run seventh wicket stand which helped Pakistan reach 291-9 on a sluggish Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The victory gives Pakistan a 2-0 lead in the five-match series while this becomes Sri Lanka’s ninth defeat in a row.

Skipper Upul Tharanga became the first Sri Lankan and 11th batsmen in the one-day history to carry his bat through a complete innings with a fighting 144-ball 112 not out with 14 boundaries — his 15th ODI century.

It were bowlers who helped Pakistan defend a low total despite Tharanga and Jeffrey Vandarsay (22) put up a fighting 76-run eighth wicket stand, but it wasn’t enough.

Dropped twice on 13 and then on 20, Tharana stood alone as Sri Lanka needed 51 off the last five overs but the last two batsmen were run out and he was left stranded.

It were bowlers who helped Pakistan defend a low target.

Once paceman Junaid Khan removed Niroshan Dickwella for three in the third over, spinners Shadab, Shoaib Malik (1-17) and Mohammad Hafeez (1-24) rocked the Sri Lankan batting with regular wickets.

Earlier, Azam followed up his 103 which anchored Pakistan’s 83-run win in the first game in Dubai on Friday, once again anchoring the innings.

Pakistan, who won the toss and batted, found the going tough as they lost half the side at the end of 20 overs for just 79, but Azam and Shadab led the fightback.

Azam brought up his seventh one-day hundred off 130 balls — his fourth this year — with a sharp double in the 49th over.

Shadab, who scored 14 not out in his only previous innings, played a support role during which he hit just one boundary off 68 balls.

Sri Lankan new-ball bowlers Lahiru Gamage (4-57) and Suranga Lakmal (1-42) made early inroads with three wickets inside first power-play of ten overs.

Gamage had Fakhar Zaman dismissed for 11 and Mohammad Hafeez for eight while Lakmal dismissed out-of-form Ahmed Shehzad for eight.

Medium pacer Thisara Perera (2-34) then struck twice, removing Shoaib Malik (11) and Sarfraz Ahmed (five) to leave Pakistan in a spot of bother.

Azam added 22 for the sixth wicket with Imad Wasim (ten) before his stand with Shadab gave Pakistan’s total some respectability.

The remaining matches will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 18) and Sharjah (October 20 and 23). The two teams will also play three Twenty20 internationals, the first two in Abu Dhabi (October 26 and 27) and the last in Lahore (October 29).
